North Carolina's Sauce Competition for Amateurs and Professionals

Our Judges

We've assembled a great and talented set of judges for this competition:
  • Bob Garner
Author of the critically acclaimed book “North Carolina Barbecue: Flavored by Time ”, Bob Garner is the official voice on North Carolina Barbecue. You want to know? He's the official expert.

  • J. Scott Wilson
Having saved Earth from a solar flare while simultaneously discovering a cure for the common cold, J. Scott Wilson next turned his attention to the world of food. After stints as a short order cook and in various levels of restaurant management, he's spent most of the last decade writing about food, be it haute cuisine or his beloved barbecue. When he's not writing, he can most often be found out by the garage, swathed in a cloud of woodsmoke and cursing at a recalcitrant pork butt or beef brisket. He lives in Gastonia, N.C., but asks that you not hold that against him.

  • Jerry Snead
I have been involved with "pig cookin' and barbeque about all my life.  I remember my grandfather cooking bbq at Bob Browns BBQ in Selma, NC when I was 5 years old.  I began competition cooking in 1989 and finished first at the Ham and Yam festival our first time out.  I have placed as high as 2nd  in the NC State BBQ Championship and have cooked in contest throughout North Carolina, east and west, as well as some contest in South Carolina.  After several years of cooking competition I became interested in the judging aspect of BBQ "pig" cooking and was asked to hold the first sanctioned NC Pork Council ( formerly called the NC Pork Producers) BBQ Judging school at my home about 15 years ago.  I judge as many contests as I can when requested.

  • Fredi Morf
    Culinary instructor at Wake Tech

  • Ned Perry
The “voice of the people”. He doesn't need your sauce, 'cause he can make his own. However, if he likes it, he will tell the world (and yes, he has lots of great contacts)!
